ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) is a recently implemented piece of EU legislation which is applicable to all large enterprises and organisations with either a turnover of 50 million Euros or a staff count in excess of 250. It requires them to introduce a programme of energy audits which compile a review of their overall energy usage and work out how much energy is used per employee by the business. The overall aim of this is to try and identify where Companies can save energy in line with commitments in overall carbon emission reduction across the continent.

If your business has fully certified ISO50001 for its buildings, industrial processes and transport operations, it will be deemed to be compliant with ESOS. Each of these processes will have their energy usage and outputs analysed carefully in order to identify areas of significant energy consumption. Assessors are tasked with maintaining an understanding of at least 90% of the client’s usage via the aforementioned energy audits.

Compliance with ESOS is mandatory, so it’s in the best interests for your business to act sooner rather than later. The deadline for the first compliance period is 5th December 2015.
